» Time travel back to 1000 A.D.: Survival tips

A bunch of people try to figure out how to best survive and make your way in the world if you were suddenly dropped in Europe around A.D. 1000. The most sensible/interesting suggestions:

  • Do anything you can that’s related to sanitation and boiling water. You can invent whiskey, keep alive longer, maybe become a town doctor just by dint of knowing (but not talking about) germ theory.
  • You won’t know the language, and you’ll probably be quite tall, soft, and white-toothed. Pretend you’re from some far-off country. In the comments I’ve read so far, no one pointed out that if you’re black you’re gonna have a lot of explaining to do in medieval Europe.
  • You know a lot of math, but they don’t have Arabic numerals yet so you’ll have to figure something out. You also know how to write, but in a script still being formed.
  • Pretty much everyone thinks your best bet is in the priesthood.
I will continue to spend much more time and attention on this than I do on any of my real-world problems. By the way, you’re kinda screwed if you showed up in your contacts. You’ve got about two weeks to learn how to grind lenses.
